Professional teeth cleaning provides targeted caries prevention and is the most important preventive measure for protecting your teeth against periodontitis in the long term. It is therefore the foundation for healthy teeth, healthy gums and stable oral health over the long term. At our practice in Vienna, we offer thorough, gentle and individually tailored teeth cleaning that goes far beyond daily toothbrushing.
Benefits of professional teeth cleaning
Regular professional teeth cleaning offers numerous benefits that are relevant both aesthetically and medically:
- Removal of tartar and bacterial plaque
- Prevention of tooth decay and gum inflammation
- Protection against periodontitis and loosening of teeth
- Smooth, clean tooth surfaces
- Reduction of bad breath
- Support for your general health
- Longer-lasting fillings, crowns and implants

Why is professional teeth cleaning so important?
Even with excellent technique, a toothbrush and dental floss only reach about 60 to 70% of the tooth surfaces. Biofilm forms in the remaining niches, especially in the gum pockets and the narrow spaces between the teeth. Without professional cleaning, this plaque mineralises into hard tartar, which is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.
If this barrier is not regularly broken down by professional teeth cleaning at the dentist, painful inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) or of the tissues supporting the teeth (periodontitis) can develop.
In addition, regular professional cleaning at the dentist is crucial for the longevity of existing crowns, bridges or implants. Professional teeth cleaning also helps to detect problem areas early, before major damage occurs.

How professional teeth cleaning works at Dr. Hussein's practice in Vienna
Professional teeth cleaning at our practice follows these steps:
- Examination: Check of your current oral hygiene status and your gums.
- Removal of deposits: Using ultrasound and special hand instruments, we gently remove tartar and soft deposits.
- Polishing: The tooth surfaces are smoothed so that it is harder for new bacteria to settle.
- Air polishing: Removal of stubborn discolouration (e.g. from coffee, tea, nicotine).
- Fluoride treatment: A special gel hardens the tooth enamel and protects it against acid attacks.
- Individual advice: We give you tips on optimal care for your oral hygiene at home.
Duration, costs & frequency
A teeth cleaning session at Dr. Hussein's practice in Vienna usually takes between 45 and 60 minutes, depending on how much cleaning is needed. For effective preventive care, we recommend professional teeth cleaning every six months.
The cost of professional teeth cleaning varies depending on the work involved. The statutory health insurance funds do not usually cover the costs, but many private supplementary insurance policies reimburse them in full or in part. We will be happy to inform you about our fees in advance.

Frequently asked questions: Professional teeth cleaning
How often should professional teeth cleaning be carried out?
As a rule, once or twice a year. If you are at increased risk, more frequent appointments may be advisable.
What can I eat after teeth cleaning?
We recommend not eating anything for about an hour after the treatment and drinking only water. For at least 24 hours, you should avoid foods and drinks that stain (coffee, red wine, curry) and refrain from smoking, as the tooth enamel is temporarily more receptive to colour pigments.
Can I have professional teeth cleaning during pregnancy?
Yes, it is actually highly recommended! Due to hormonal changes, the gums are more prone to inflammation during pregnancy (“pregnancy gingivitis”). Gentle professional teeth cleaning protects both mother and child.
Does professional teeth cleaning at the dentist hurt?
The treatment is gentle and, in most cases, does not hurt. We can adapt it individually for sensitive areas.
Is professional teeth cleaning covered by insurance?
The statutory health insurance funds (such as the ÖGK) usually do not cover the cost of professional teeth cleaning. However, many private supplementary insurance policies reimburse part or all of the cost. We will be happy to issue you with an invoice to submit to your insurer.
